Winter wheat remained adequately protected from bitter
cold by snow cover over most of the region.
For a
second consecutive week, minimum temperatures as low
as -30°C across central portions of Ukraine and Russia
had no detrimental impact on dormant winter wheat due
to a moderate to deep snowpack (10-60 cm).
In
southwestern Russia, a fresh snowfall (5-15 cm)
protected winter wheat from nighttime readings as low as
-20°C.
Overall, wheat continued to overwinter in good
condition in Ukraine and Russia.
